
Joshua Bernard was already a veteran of Iraq yet his luck ran out in Afghanistan on August 14th of this year. The photo of the dying Marine taken by AP’s Julia Jacobson has caused the necessary controversy. Defence secretary Gates has strongly objected to the publishing of the photo however it did finally manage to see the light of day.
Although many stand screaming in favour of our fragile first amendment others take a more conservative stand. It looks like the debate on the publishing of dead soldiers is turning in favour of the former as barely any dead soldiers have made a media appearence under the reign of our last cowboy president.
Every fighting soldier deserves due respect but in order to prevent future casualties people need to be informed. The image presented to the public has offen been one of a “clean” war. This is both hypocritical and patronizing.
Defence of the Realm has a different yet very inforamtive view on the issue.
